Application for Ariel
□ Name: Elliot Nightray
□ Journal: guielliotine
□ Series: Pandora Hearts
□ Canon point: Chapter 28
□ History: Here and Here!
□ Personality:
A few words can sum up Elliot in an instant: loud, violent and unmistakably noble. When it comes to the youngest son of Duke Nightray, Elliot is quick to punch a person in the face and ask questions later. Temper tantrums are common place, as are flying pieces of furniture. There's more to Elliot than just an angry face though; the good, the bad, and the downright horrifying.
Being born the youngest child of a Duke, especially Duke Nightray, is no easy existence. Brought up right from the very start to be a prim and proper individual, Elliot certainly retained the essential teachings to fit the mould of his class, but that definitely doesn't mean that he's ever abided by them. While those of his status would be underhanded going about insulting a peer, Elliot isn't afraid to scream someone's faults directly in their face. Curses and threats are regular events, as are fists being thrown people's way. While others strive for approval from society and crave to climb the status ladder, Elliot could care less what others think of him. Granted, that doesn't mean he'll take any insults or comments about his behaviour lying down. Insulting his family name isn't a wise move either. Elliot is proud of the Nightray family name and is willing to do what he must to uphold its honour.
Rash and ready to snap at the drop of a hat, Elliot is ultimately driven to act on impulse by his emotions. He's unbelievably stubborn, unable to let things go or leave loose ends hanging. If there's an argument that's happened, it needs to be finished right then and there. If there's a problem, it better be fixed now. He's unable to let things go, holding onto grudges and bad blood for, well, ever really. An example of this would be Elliot's anger toward his older brother, Gilbert Nightray for leaving the Nightray family, only to go and become a servant to the Vessalius household. It doesn't help that the two households, Nightray and Vessalius, are essentially at each other's throats. To Elliot, the fact his brother left his family was not just a big slap to the face, it was downright betrayal. Unless his beliefs are brought into question, Elliot will firmly go on believing what he does unless someone tries to prove him wrong or otherwise. His hatred for the Vessalius children was unquestionable, but after he came to get to know Oz Vessalius, Elliot decided that maybe they weren't all bad.
While Elliot may be a noble, in most cases he can't stand others of the same class standing as him. They piss him off, to be quite frank. They're false and unkind, and if there's one thing Elliot can't bear, it's a fake person. It's why Elliot refused for the longest time to pick out a servant for himself from a noble family. Instead, he ended up choosing Leo, an orphan child who wasn't afraid to scream back at him or tell him his faults right to his face. Leo was the only person who wouldn't put on a show or grovel at his feet. Rather, Leo was more inclined to speak (or yell) at Elliot as an equal. Nothing more, nothing less.
While Elliot isn't without his faults, he isn't all just fists and fanfare. There's a quieter, more gentle side of Elliot Nightray that exists as well, he just doesn't show it often. He cares deeply for his family members and Leo and it's usually the latter who sees this docile side of Elliot more than anyone else. This side of him usually comes out when he's alone relaxing with Leo quietly in a room or when he's immersed in playing the piano. Children seem to be fond of Elliot as well, even if he more often than not isn't exactly sure how to deal with them.
He's a noble soul, according to Vincent his older brother, and it couldn't be better said. Elliot may not be perfect, but he tries to do the right thing if it will keep those he cherishes safe. Contracted to Humpty Dumpty unwittingly, Elliot is an illegal contractor and ultimately the one responsible for the death of his siblings and family members. The guilt that comes with that knowledge is almost suffocating, but Elliot snaps himself out of his self wallowing. While he hates self sacrifice more than anything else, (and tears Oz's face off for it when Oz belittles himself), Elliot ends up rejecting his Chain and in turn killing himself to destroy its existence. Elliot won't let anyone feel burdened by him - if he has problems it's his duty and his alone to fix them. No one else's. If it kills him in the long run? (Which it did...) So be it.
That said, Elliot Nightray is a hot headed individual, but one that possesses not only the strength of his fists but personal conviction and belief. He won't allow himself to feel sorry for himself, let alone let others feel sorry for themselves or for him. Nothing good comes out of letting yourself be engulfed by despair. After all, if you can't find happiness yourself, how can you expect to find it for others?
□ Age: 16
□ Gender: Male/Male
□ Appearance: He's the one on the right! (The link works this time I swear.)
Standing at 5'6", Elliot Nightray is a teen to be reckoned with. With light short blond hair, piercing blue eyes and a beauty mark beneath his right, he's more often than not seen sporting a frown. When attending the academy he's dressed in the school's uniform which is a white overcoat and pants, with a black under vest, white bowtie and white shoes. When he's not at school however he's usually dressed in black (vest, knee length coat, shoes and cloak) and is usually he's seen carrying his sword around with him. He also has pierced ears which he wears blue studs in. How fashionable. He's as human as one can be, lean and fit from sword practice, and there's nothing that particularly stands out about him physically one way or another. One thing that does however mark him is when Humpty Dumpty is summoned - the contract sigil of an illegal contractor forms on his chest. It doesn't last for long, however, and Elliot never notices when it does appear.
□ Abilities/Powers:
+ Swordsmanship - Elliot is extremely talented when it comes to wielding a sword and he always has the sword his father gave to him on his body. He's quick agile, and knows just when to strike.
+ Humpty Dumpty - Elliot Nightray is an Illegal Contractor and is contracted to a being called a Chain, which are entities who reside in the Abyss, a place that is, well, essentially an abyss. It's another dimension, somewhat equivalent to Hell in a sense and when humans wish to have power, they form contracts with Chains. Humpty Dumpty is the Chain that Elliot Nightray is illegally contracted to, thanks to Leo forcing him to unwittingly contract in an attempt to save his life, even though for the majority of the series Elliot does not recall this or is even aware of the Chain's presence. Aside from the moments leading up to the end of Elliot's life, Humpty Dumpty only makes itself known to Elliot through Elliot's nightmares, which show the true memories that he holds that Humpty Dumpty forced Elliot to suppress, and later on as a voice speaking to him.
Long story short, Humpty Dumpty is an essential part of Elliot's soul - that's what happens to people when they contract with a Chain. Due to the fact Elliot is an Illegal Contractor, without the Chain he would be unable to exist. Humpty Dumpty is a Chain that was created from the body of the person who originally had Glen Baskerville's soul in it and thus Humpty Dumpty exists to protect that very soul and its new body from being badly harmed/killed. The rest of the time, it just lays dormant inside Elliot's soul.
Humpty Dumpty itself is able to suppress its contractor's memories and even rewrite them, causing them to suffer a nasty case of nightmares. Along with this Humpty Dumpty can force its contractor to act in its steed without ever having to manifest itself outside their body, causing them to commit an act of violence or self sacrifice to protect the body that houses Glen Baskerville's soul. It's also a viable opponent when it is summoned, considering it has a nasty habit of trying to impale those who are a threat to Leo (who is the current container for Glen Baskerville's soul) with its tongue or lopping off their heads. Any pain that Humpty Dumpty may feel however, would be directly experienced by Elliot, due to the contract.
In Ariel I would assume that Humpty Dumpty will be dormant/sealed and unable to manifest himself outside of Elliot's body until he leveled up? It may speak to Elliot or force him to experience awful nightmares, but it would be incapable of bringing upon any harm to anyone else, aside from forcing Elliot to be more violent toward those who try to bring harm to Leo. ( If he wasn't already violent enough...) If my assumption about how this would work is wrong please let me know!
+ Talented musician and composer - Elliot is not only a composer, but he's very adept at playing the piano. He also plays the violin, but not to the same level as the piano.
+ Flower Language - It's mentioned in the series that Elliot is knowledgeable about Victorian flower language, even though he insists he only knows because his sister is really into it.
